The package includes the following targets to be met in 2020:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>a total reduction of 20% of the emissions of greenhouse gases compared with 1990; this reduction is to be increased to 30% in 2020 if other developed countries commit themselves to comparable reduction targets. It is connected to an agreement on the share of each&nbsp;MemberState&nbsp;in this target;<\/li><li>a share of 20% energy from renewable sources. The target includes a 10% share of transport fuels from renewable sources; the production of these biofuels has to meet specific sustainability criteria;<\/li><li>an improvement of 20% in energy efficiency.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Energy Package which binds Member States to these targets is detailed in a total of six Legislatve texts respectively dealing with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Decision No 406\/2009\/EC of the European Parliament and the Council on the effort of Member States to reduce their GHG emissions (<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=20-in-2020\">20% in 2020<\/a>)<\/li><li>Directive 2009\/28\/EC on&nbsp;the use of energy from renewable sources (<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=renewables\">Renewables<\/a>)<\/li><li>Directive 2009\/31\/EC on the geological storage of carbon dioxide (Carbon Capture and Storage,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=carbon-capture-and-storage\">CCS<\/a>)<\/li><li>Directive 2009\/29\/EC on an improved and extended emission trading system (<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=ets-to-encourage-energy-efficiency\">ETS to encourage Energy Efficiency<\/a>)<\/li><li>EC Regulation No 443\/2009 on&nbsp;an average&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=passengers-cars-and-co2\">CO2 Emissions standard<\/a>&nbsp;for new cars<\/li><li>Directive 2009\/30\/EC on&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/backup.efca.net\/index.php?page=passengers-cars-and-co2\">Fuel quality<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The adoption of the&nbsp;Energy Package&nbsp;at the end of 2008 comprises the agreement between European Parliament and Council on the 20-20-20 strategy in 2020.
